Singapore police are investigating several foreigners who allegedly participated in the candlelight vigil held in support of demonstrators in Hong Kong at the Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park yesterday.
“In response to media queries, the police confirm that several foreigners are currently assisting with investigations into offences under the Public Order Act. No arrest has been made,” a police spokesperson said today.
The event organised by social worker Jolovan Wham and human rights activist Rachel Zeng, drew hundreds of supporters.
Under rules for the use of Speakers’ Corner – which are overseen by the National Parks Board – only Singapore citizens and permanent residents are allowed to take part in demonstrations there.
Foreigners and those who organise assemblies and processions involving foreigners are required to obtain a police permit before they can use the space.
The police spokesperson said: “While foreigners are allowed to work or live here, they have to abide by our laws. They should not import their domestic issues from their countries into Singapore and conduct activities which can disturb public order. Those who break the law will be seriously dealt with.” – Today Online, October 2, 2014.
