Myanmar in ASEAN

Myanmar joined the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1997 and will assume the ASEAN Chair for the first time in 2014.

Myanmar was due Chair ASEAN in 2006 but the European Union and United States of America threatened to boycott ASEAN events under Myanmar’s Chairmanship due to the military regime’s poor human rights record. Myanmar passed the 2006 Chairmanship on to the Philippines. The granting of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar in 2014 is considered as ASEAN Member States’ support for recent political reforms in Myanmar.
