Thailand is one of the founding members of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and signed the Bangkok Declaration on 8 August 1967. During Thailand’s chairmanship in 2008 to 2009, the ASEAN Charter came into force, outlining guiding principles for the new ASEAN and making it a rule-based organization and more people-centered. In addition, Thailand became the host country for various ASEAN events such as the 14th ASEAN Summit in 2009 and the 1st ASEAN Youth Summit and has initiated formal engagement with the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and representatives of civil society organizations within the region.
