The US Embassy in Myanmar has announced that a US-Myanmar human rights meeting, aimed at promoting human rights in Myanmar, will be held in the country from January 11 to 15.

The dialogue, one of a number held in countries in the region, follows the first dialogue held in October 2012.

The US Embassy announced that government delegates from both countries, together with civic organization representatives, will participate in the meeting in which human rights developments and standards will be discussed in order to improve ties between the two countries.

Prior to the meeting, the US delegation will visit Myitkyina to gain insight into the human rights situation in Kachin State.

Leading US officials who will attend include US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Mr Tom Malinowski, the leader of the delegation, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, Ms Anne Richard, Deputy Commander of US Pacific Command Lieutenant General Anthony G Crutchfield, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Mr Thomas Harvey.

Myanmar National Human Rights Commission vice chairman U Sit Myaing told Mizzima: “Our commission will attend the meeting. I’ve heard that the venue is in Nay Pyi Taw. On Monday, our commission members will decide about the main subject that we will talk about in the meeting.”

The US Embassy said that it would announce the venue and the detailed programme of the meeting shortly.
