Being blindly engrossed with human rights as espoused by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights may cause discordance in the society, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.
He said certain quarters ignored universal values as they had more faith with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations.
“In fact, a non-governmental organisation has given a negative report on Malaysia’s human rights position and religious freedom although it is guaranteed in the Federal Constitution,” he said when opening a human rights forum organised by the Malaysian Islamic University Council in collaboration the Islamic Development Department here today.
The Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the Universal Periodic Review Process (UPR) (Comango) had submitted recommendations to the United Nations on the government’s alleged human rights violations.
They have been accused of calling for the freedom of religion, including renouncing Islam; the protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) rights; the removal of Malay privileges, the freedom to embrace Syiah teachings; and the right for non-Muslims to use ‘Allah’ to refer to God.
