Despite the releases of many political prisoners to date and President Thein Sein’s 15 July promise to release all political prisoners by the end of the year, hundreds still remain in jail.

Despite the releases of many political prisoners to date and President Thein Sein’s 15 July promise to release all political prisoners by the end of the year, hundreds still remain in jail.

An increasing crackdown on human rights activists this year has been witnessed. Thant Zin Htet is a student activist from Burma, arrested on 11 June 2013 and charged under Article 18(b) of the Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Procession Law, for his part promoting farmers’ rights and showing his support for farmers who were protesting against confiscated land. Many peaceful protesters have been arrested under this repressive legislation, which enables the Burma government to ban any gathering, while almost all the old repressive laws remain in place. Furthermore, it is now clear that the political prisoner review committee will not solve the problem of political prisoners.

    Objective

    • Demand that the Burma government release all remaining political prisoners
    • Repeal all repressive legislation used to imprison human rights activists

    Target Institution

President Thein Sein and his government

    How to Support The Campaign

Please join in pressuring Thein Sein to live up to his words. Please also join in this initiative by Burma Campaign UK to highlight these judicial and legislative attacks on human rights activists in Burma. Send a letter to EU High Representative Catherine Ashton to include demands for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners such as Thant Zin Htet and the repeal of all repressive legislation used to target human rights activists in the UN General Assembly Resolution on Burma.

There’s already a template letter available, so all you need to do is copy the letter and paste it into the form on the EU External Action Service website! Please also forward this action to your friends, family and networks.

We hope that you will stand with us in calling for the release of all remaining political prisoners in Burma.

    In Solidarity,
    The Burma Partnership Secretariat
