BANGKOK, 4 September 2014 (NNT) – Lieutenant General Preecha Chan-ocha, the younger brother of Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha, has argued the United Nations’ statement expressing concern over Thailand’s human rights control in politics.
The UN had earlier issued a public announcement expressing its concern on the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s policy to prevent any political demonstrations from taking place, saying that such action limits the freedom of speech and fundamental human rights.
However, Lt. Gen. Preecha stated that the NCPO has done so to stop the country from facing another political rift and that the martial law has been declared to ensure order in the country, as there have been a number of unwarranted attacks by gunmen during Thailand’s seven-month long political protests.
He has also assured that the military’ Court Martial had given a fair trial to all involved in political crimes during the past several months, and that most people in the international community understood the reasons on why the Army had to declare a coup in the first place.
