Call for nominations for new govt rep for women’s rights on ASEAN commission

The Ministry of Social and Family Development invites civil society organisations (CSOs) to nominate suitable candidates for appointment as Singapore Government Representative for Women’s Rights on the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC).

The term of office will be from Oct 2014 to Oct 2017, said a press release issued by the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

The ACWC was inaugurated in 2010 in Hanoi with Dr Aline Wong as the Singapore Government Representative for Women’s Rights.

Dr Wong’s term of office ends in October 2014 after having served 4.5 years.

She initiated the first ASEAN-wide training programme for frontline social workers in the region to improve their skills in helping victims of family violence.

During her term of office, she also initiated the setting up of an ASEAN Network of Social Service Agencies which is currently being considered by the 10 ASEAN Member States for implementation.

Nominees for the appointment as Singapore Government Representative for Women’s Rights should meet the following selection criteria:

  • A Singapore citizen with standing among women leaders and women’s groups in Singapore;
  • Have experience in dealing with women-related issues and be able to take part in international discussions and debates and to objectively defend Singapore’s position and interests on such issues; and
  • Understandthe history of our region, the diversity of people, cultures and political systems in ASEAN and the realities that this diversity imposes on ASEAN in all fields.

Candidates should be nominated by an organisation whose work is relevant to the ACWC. As the ACWC is an inter-governmental body of ASEAN, its members are appointed by the respective governments of ASEAN Member States. The appointed government representative will be representing Singapore on the ACWC.

Nomination forms are available for download on MSF website (www.msf.gov.sg) and should be submitted via fax (62588605), email ([email protected]), post or hand-delivered to the Communications and International Relations Division of the Ministry of Social and Family Development by 12 noon on Monday Sep 15, 2014.
