KARAPATAN is an alliance of human rights organizations, human rights desks, committees of people’s organizations, and grassroots organizations committed to the protection, defense and advancement of people’s rights and civil liberties, especially of the disadvantaged and marginalized peoples.
Karapatan has chapters in 17 regions in the Philippines and has more than 40 member organizations under its umbrella. Its mandate is to monitor and document human rights violations; provide paralegal and other services to victims of rights abuses and their kin; train human rights defenders and educate the general public on human rights issues and concepts; informs the public on the human rights situation through information materials, events and reports; establish and develop linkages with rights advocates within and outside the country to promote solidarity on human rights concerns; and engage courts, government agencies and international human rights mechanisms.
