Thailand has backed work by the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in tackling rights violations, aiding migrant workers and apprehending transnational criminals in the region.

After a meeting yesterday with Asean civil-society representatives such as Chalida Thacharoensak from the Community Potential Foundation about the AICHR’s duty framework, acting Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow affirmed that Thailand gave importance to AICHR and supported its work to promote and protect human rights in the Asean region.

Urging the organisation to tackle the above-mentioned issues that affected the region, he said Thailand also backed private-sector help to curb problems in each country.

Thailand is due to host a special AICHR meeting on human rights in Bangkok in November.
