President Jokowi signs Convention Against Human Trafficking

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, along with other leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), signed the ASEAN Convention Against Human Trafficking in Person (ACTIP), especially children and women here Saturday.

Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA News) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo, along with other leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), signed the ASEAN Convention Against Human Trafficking in Person (ACTIP), especially children and women here Saturday.

After being signed the document was submitted to the ASEAN Secretariat General.

The need to urgently deal with the human trafficking issue emerged and started to be discussed at the 18th ASEAN Summit in Jakarta.

The ASEAN leaders in the summit announced a decision to order ASEAN ministers concerned to start considering the ASEAN Convention on Trafficking in Person.

They said that the biggest victims of trafficking in person have been women and children so that a basic law is needed that internationally protects them as well as other international conventions.

The ACTIP will be used as an effective legal framework for the region to overcome human trafficking.

The aim of the ACTIP is to prevent and fight human trafficking, especially of women and children, protect and help human trafficking victims with regard to giving them a decent livelihood and cooperation with concerned parties to realize the ACTIP goals.
