The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) has appointed Mrs Laura Hwang Cheng Lin as the new Singapore government representative for women’s rights on the Asean Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC).
SINGAPORE – The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) has appointed Mrs Laura Hwang Cheng Lin as the new Singapore government representative for women’s rights on the Asean Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC).
Her term of appointment will be for three years, starting October. Mrs Hwang succeeds Dr Aline Wong who is the current representative.
Thanking Dr Wong for her contributions, Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing said: “Dr Aline Wong has served four-and-a-half years as Singapore’s representative with distinction and passion.
“She has been a strong advocate to promote and protect women’s rights in Asean.
“During her term, Dr Wong initiated the first Asean-wide training programme for frontline social workers to improve their skills in helping victims of family violence.”
Mr Chan welcomed Mrs Hwang’s appointment, saying: “Mrs Laura Hwang brings with her a wealth of experince on issues related to women, and is well poised to represent Singapore at the ACWC and international arena.”
Mrs Hwang served two terms from 2010 to 2014 as president of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organsation, the national co-ordinating body for 57 women’s organisations.
During this time, she was also a director on the Asean Confederation of Women’s Organisations, an advisor to WINGS (Women’s Initiative for Ageing Successfully), and a founding member and mentor of the Council of Advisors of the Young Women’s Leadership Connection.
Mrs Hwang is also the chairperson of the Audit Committee of the KK Hospital Endowment Fund and a member of its Board of Trustees.
From 2006 to 2010, Mrs Hwang was the former president of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) Singapore and is currently a member of the Nominating Council of the IWF Interational and current Co-Chair of the BoardAgender.
The ACWC, which has 20 representatives from the Asean member states, is aimed at promoting the well-being, development and participation of women and children in Asean.
Mr Koh Choon Hui is currently Singapore’s representative for children’s rights.
