The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) is an autonomous body though it was set up by the government, rights commission chairman Win Mra told Parliament on October 17.
He was responding to a question raised by MP Kyaw Win on the 19th day of the 11th parliamentary session in Nay Pyi Taw, the official capital of the country.
MP Kyaw Win asked whether the human rights commission is a [unwitting] tool of the government or an independent agency, and about its working process.
The MNHRC is an independent organisation running on government funds, established in September 2011 by the government with the aim to promote and safeguard the fundamental rights of the citizens of the country, the chairman replied.
One of its responsibilities is to submit annual reports to the President and Parliament on its activities and developments in the field of human rights, as it is formed as an independent organisation under the Union Parliament Law, Win Mra added.
Accordingly, the government is required to provide funds to the commission for performing its activities and tasks effectively, he explained.
