Indonesia Deploys Military to Enforce ‘New Normal’ in Jakarta

Soldiers were deployed to the Bundaran HI MRT Station in Central Jakarta on Wednesday to enforce “new normal” health protocols as the government prepares to relax large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said yesterday a total of 340,000 police officers and soldiers will be deployed in 25 cities across Indonesia to warn people to social distance and wear a mask in public.

The police and military will also be deployed at shopping malls and commuter train stations.

The plan to relax the PSBB has come under criticism as the pandemic curve in Indonesia shows no sign of flattening and the country braces for a spike in Covid-19 cases after the Idul Fitri holiday.
