KUALA LUMPUR – The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) should use its power and influence to unearth the truth about mass graves within the country’s borders, said the Bar Council.

Its chairman Steven Thiru said Suhakam had the credibility and experience to carry out the task of identifying the perpetrators and those complicit in the death camps.

“It is shocking and appalling that you can have something like that in our backyard and it’s all compounded by the fact that there is almost a sense of inertia on the part of government in dealing with this,” he said.

He pointed out that in early May, there was almost categorical denial on the part of the authorities about these camps.

Both the Bar and the National Human Rights Society (Hakam) handed over memoranda about the mass graves, human trafficking and death camps in Malaysia to Suhakam commissioner Prof Datuk Dr Aishah Bidin.
