KUALA LUMPUR: The European Union (EU) will bring up jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case in all high-level meetings with the Malaysian Government.

This, according to PKR international bureau chief Gooi Hsiao Leung, follows a motion filed in the European Parliament by the Liberal International (LI), a federation of liberal and progressive democratic parties. “The motion asks the European Parliament, through the High Representative for Foreign Policy, on what steps will be taken to ensure Anwar’s release.”

Gooi disclosed that a LI delegation will be in Malaysia in July and have expressed a wish to visit Anwar in jail.

“The Asean Parliamentarians for Human Rights have also started an international signature campaign for Anwar’s release.”

Anwar was jailed on February 10 for five years after the Federal Court found no reason to interfere with an earlier Court of Appeal decision to set aside a High Court acquittal and convict him on a charge of sodomy.

Anwar’s family subsequently filed a Petition for Pardon with the Agong but it was not accepted this time. He can refile the Petition.
