    SEAPA’s Alerts Officer is responsible for overseeing SEAPA’s monitoring and alerts system, as the organization’s main mechanism for its campaign for press freedom and freedom of expression. The Alerts Officer ensures the consistent relay of such information to SEAPA’s network and audience, and leads the development of appropriate responses from the organization. The Alerts Officer is a key member of SEAPA’s Campaigns team to ensure that activities are carried out smoothly and effectively.

    General Description:
    SEAPA’s Alerts Officer is responsible for overseeing SEAPA’s monitoring and alerts system, as the organization’s main mechanism for its campaign for press freedom and freedom of expression. The Alerts Officer ensures the consistent relay of such information to SEAPA’s network and audience, and leads the development of appropriate responses from the organization. The Alerts Officer is a key member of SEAPA’s Campaigns team to ensure that activities are carried out smoothly and effectively.

    Specific Responsibilities

    •     Oversee the monitoring and recording of incidents related to press freedom and freedom of expression in Southeast Asia.
    •     Prepare action alerts and other statements; distribute these through SEAPA’s network, communication platforms, and social media; and monitor responses to these.
    •     Coordinate with SEAPA Alerts partner organizations on common and/or joint activities.
    •     Conduct training, where necessary, for member and partner organisations and their stakeholders, alerts and monitoring on freedom of expression violations.
    •     Plan and provide information and inputs related to press freedom and free expression campaigns, outreach, and fundraising and programme reporting.

    Qualifications

    Education and work experience

    • University degree, preferably in the field of journalism or communication, (Experience as a journalist can be considered in lieu of formal degree).
    • At least 3 years of experience as a journalist or in advocacy and campaigns for human rights or civil liberties, particularly on freedom of expression and press freedom.
    • In-depth understanding of issues related to the media, press freedom and freedom of expression, including demonstrable experience of work on this field in at least one country in Southeast Asia

    Skills

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, and, ideally, one other language in Southeast Asia.
    • Strong analytical skills demonstrated by the ability to rapidly analyse information from diverse sources and formulate an organizational response.
    • Good English language editing skills.
    • Familiarity with the use of digital tools for communications (including social media, website content management systems, data visualization, and databases). (Or a quick learner in the use and application of these tools).
    •     Strong networking skills to coordinate relationships among members in a network and to maintain good relations with the media.
    •     Must be willing to be based in the SEAPA Secretariat office in Bangkok, Thailand.
    •     Must be willing to travel throughout the region to carry out regular and assigned tasks.

    Benefits

    SEAPA offers a competitive salary and benefits package including work permit, health, life and travel insurance, social security benefits and a provident fund. The starting gross salary for this post is THB 45,000/month, subject to adjustment at the end of the three-month probation period, depending on performance and qualifications.
