The 6th Regional Consultation on ASEAN and Human Rights

October 1, 2013 - October 2, 2013

“Advancing Human Rights in ASEAN During the 2nd Term of ASEAN Human Rights Mechanisms (2012-2015)”

The Regional Consultation on ASEAN and Human Rights is an ASEAN civil society initiative led by the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) and SAPA Task Force on ASEAN and Human Rights (TFAHR). The Regional Consultation serves as a platform for strengthening engagement with the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanisms, and for discussing the human rights situation in the ASEAN region.

This year, the the 6th Regional Consultation on ASEAN and Human Rights will be held as part of the continuous advocacy to strengthen the ASEAN human rights mechanisms. 2012 and 2013 mark the end of the first terms of AICHR and ACWC respectively. Thus, this year’s consultation will also be an important venue to take stock of the work of both commissions during their respective first terms, and to identify the challenges and opportunities in the push for improvements in their second terms.

The key issues that will be discussed during this year’s consultation are: The review of the AICHR Terms of Reference that is due to begin in 2014 and Business and human rights in ASEAN.

The objectives of this regional consultation are:

  • To provide a platform for dialogue, cooperation and coordination in ASEAN civil society’s engagement with AICHR and ACWC;
  • To identify challenges and opportunities in the review of the AICHR ToR; and
  • To further the approach of Corporate Accountability, which is based on international human rights law and standards, in the issue of business and human rights in ASEAN;
