TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Deputy Foreign Minister AM Fachir said the Indonesian government will always support East Timor to become a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
“Indonesia continues to support Timor-Leste’s membership in ASEAN and will continue to encourage ASEAN member states to invite the Timorese to participate in enhancing the nation’s capacity building towards becoming a member,” he said in Jakarta Thursday, September 1, when accepting the visit of East Timor’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Roberto Sarmento de Oliveira Soares.
In the occasion, Fachir conveyed a number of issues that both countries commit to solve; from economic development, investment, as well as the fast-tracking of land and maritime borders issues.
Fachir said the two countries must improve coordination to expedite the implementation of said commitments.
In the meeting, Soares expressed his appreciation towards the Indonesian government for its continuous support in a number of political, economic, social and cultural partnerships.
Both deputy ministers also discussed other issues concerning the two countries, such as the trilateral cooperation among East Timor, Indonesia, and Australia.
