Special Meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) convened a Special Meeting on 8 – 9 March 2014 at the ASEAN Secretariat. The Special Meeting was chaired by H.E. U Kyaw Tint Swe, the Representative of Myanmar and the Chair of the AICHR.
The Meeting discussed the contributions of the AICHR towards the review process of its Terms of Reference (TOR). The AICHR commenced assessment of its work, as well as the preparation for the series of consultations with stakeholders that will be convened during the year. The AICHR will be conducting them in connection with the AICHR’s contribution to the initial review of the TOR. The first consultation will take place on 28 – 29 April 2014; 28 April is dedicated for the consultation with the ASEAN Sectoral Bodies, while 29 April is for the civil society organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders. The TOR of the AICHR stipulates that it shall be initially reviewed five years after its entry into force and that the review will be undertaken by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting. The AICHR worked on its Annual Report 2013 – 2014 which will be submitted to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers during its annual meeting in August.
The AICHR will convene a five day meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat in April 2014. The Meeting expressed its appreciation to the ASEAN Secretariat for providing facilities and support for the Special Meeting.
