We, concerned students, faculty, and staff of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, condemn in the strongest terms the killing of Renato “Tatay Renz” Anglao of the Manobo Pulangihon tribe of Barangay Botong, Quezon, Bukidnon.

Just before noon last February 3, 2017, while buying school supplies with his family, Tatay Renz was shot twice in the head and in the chest by bonnet wearing motorcycle riding men at the town center of Quezon killing him instantaneously in front of his wife and child.

Renato Anglao, 42 years old, is a Lumad leader of TINDOGA or the Tribal Indigenous Oppressed Group Association, a Lumad group locked in a bitter land struggle with the Montalvan estate eager to have their ancestral domain leased to pineapple plantations.

TINDOGA is a partner organization of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines-Northern Mindanao Sub-Region with whom the  Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) has a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to collaborate in research and extension efforts in combating discrimination against Mindanao’s indigenous peoples, the Lumad, under the European Union funded project “Healing the Hurt.”

The Department of Sociology, particularly, has on-going research and extension initiatives with TINDOGA and has engaged with Tatay Renz directly in their collaborative activities. We are indignant and aggrieved with his brutal death and are concerned over the trauma and uncertain future of his wife and children, and his besieged Lumad community.

We demand justice for the murder of Tatay Renz! We stand in solidarity with TINDOGA and other Lumad communities facing violence and impunity from known forces who are eager to sow terror to serve their selfish ends.

    In solidarity, we stand:
