PETALING JAYA – Human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen (pic) was detained again on Sunday evening, this time over two tweets he posted earlier in the day.
The Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) executive director is being investigated by Bukit Aman under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 pertaining to two tweets concerning hudud law.
In his tweets, Paulsen alleged hudud did not have a place in modern society as it was inhumane, and also that it was unfair to women.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said that the postings were seen as an insult which could disturb public peace.
At present, he is giving a statement to the police at Dang Wangi station, said LFL legal coordinator Michelle Yesudas, who is with Paulsen at the station.
“We are in Dang Wangi station now. The police said that they want to keep him overnight and will apply for a remand tomorrow,” Yesudas told The Star Online.
Paulsen was arrested at Dataran Underground at around 4.50 after attending an art event.
He was previously charged in the Sessions Court over a tweet in which he allegedly accused the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) of promoting extremism.
The Kelantan state assembly passed amendments to the Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II 1993 last Thursday.
The amendments will be inserted in three private member’s bills to be tabled in Parliament by this year to allow for PAS’ hudud to be practiced in Kelantan.
