Two activists held a public protest on October 24 in Sagaing, the capital of Sagaing region, demanding a four-party meeting between the country’s top leaders.

The move by the activists is seen as an attempt to push for a political dialogue between President Thein Sein, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Parliament Speaker Thura Shwe Mann and Commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing.

The two activists – Aung Zeya, chairman of the New Society Democratic Party, and Sit Yan Naing of All Burma Students Democratic Force – went around downtown Sagaing, demanding that the meeting be held to discuss public rights and farmers’ rights.

“Our protest is aimed at human rights and peace. One of the key reasons is that elected people’s representatives in Parliament never seemed to have a smile on their faces after they were elected,” said Aung Zeya.

“The meeting [of leaders] is important for national peace. Killings started after the government arranged peace talks. If President Thein Sein, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Parliament Speaker Thura Shwe Mann and Commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing meet and talk openly, with mutual trust, then national peace is not too far away. So the meeting is very important,” he added.

They also staged protests in Khin Oo and Shwebo recently and say more protests are planned in other towns.
