Advocating for ratification is a part of many international advocacy programs, yet the effectiveness is unclear. This seminar will discuss efforts made towards ratification, and consider the impact of ratification on human rights standards.

This seminar examines the question: Is it worth advocating for treaty ratification?

Advocating for ratification is a part of many international advocacy programs, yet the effectiveness is unclear. This seminar will discuss efforts made towards ratification, and consider the impact of ratification on human rights standards.

The questions covered by the speakers include:

  • Is the effort put into advocating for ratification worth it?
  • Do States notice pressure on ratification?
  • How and why do States ratify?
  • Will ratification itself lead to any improvement in human rights?
  • What are the challenges to ratification on the outstanding treaties of migrant workers and refugee rights?

The seminar will bring together people from the civil society sector, international organizations, and Government, to discuss these questions. The seminar is open to the public. Please RSVP to the email address below.

  • Sam Zafiri, Regional Director, Asia and the Pacific at International Commission of Jurists.
  • Imesh Pokharel , Human Rights Officer, OHCHR

The session will overview Thailand’s ratification procedures, and consider how and why States may be influenced to ratify treaties.

Session Two: 3.00-4.30 pm: The Civil society and cases studies of treaties.

  • Evelyn Balais-Serrano, Executive Director, Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Forum-Asia).
  • arinya Boonridrerthaikul, Director, Asylum Access Thailand.

This session speakers will address the challenges of getting treaties ratified. It will examine the choices organizations make whether to advocate for ratification, and also to examine efforts towards ratifying the Refugee and Migrant worker treaties.
