The ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute will organize a webinar on the recent Malaysian elections on 25 November 2022 (Friday) from 10:00 am onwards (Singapore/GMT+8).
The election takes place on a different playing field than previously due to constitutional amendments to lower the voting age, automatically register all voters, and eliminate party-hopping. In addition, only three state governments are concurrently holding their polls – ensuring a greater focus on national issues.
Gone are the heady days when the incumbent coalition could expect to gather 80-90 of all parliamentary seats. Since 2008, majorities have gotten slimmer, and the last three coalitions in power have only mustered narrow, unstable majorities.
The emergence of Perikatan Nasional now means that seats on the peninsula will be split at least three ways, further decreasing the chances of an outright majority. Thus, while seat numbers may be known in short order, inter- and intra-coalition bargaining could be long and lead to unexpected alliances.
This event’s speakers will analyze different aspects of the election: including seat configurations; coalition formation and campaign strategies; the role of the media; and campaign dynamics and results in different parts of the country.
