Enhancing the Role of Environmental Public Interest Litigation to Advance Environmental Rights in Southeast Asia

November 25, 2021 - November 26, 2021
CSO Event in Thailand

United Nations Environment Program and EarthRights International will organize a webinar titled “Enhancing the Role of Environmental Public Interest Litigation to Advance Environmental Rights in Southeast Asia” on November 25 and 26, 2021, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon (Bangkok/Jakarta Time).

While rapid economic development across the Southeast Asia region is providing much-needed opportunities and lifting millions of people out of poverty, it is also leading to a rapid increase of environmental pollution, social impacts and related risks. The countries of Southeast Asia have achieved notable progress in adopting environmental protection laws and regulations to address these issues.

However, due to a variety of reasons, there are still large gaps between the requirements of the law and how they are actually implemented and enforced on the ground. This workshop will focus on environmental public interest litigation as a potentially transformative mechanism that can empower communities across Southeast Asia to play a significant role in ensuring that environmental laws are complied with, and that the precious ecosystems of the region and the communities that depend on them are protected.

The workshop will bring together experienced lawyers and legal advocates to share their experiences and insights on the potential for strengthened systems of environmental public interest litigation to uphold the integrity of environmental laws and protect communities from the adverse impacts of environmental pollution.
