The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA), in collaboration with Progressive Voice, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, and ALTSEAN Burma, will organize a webinar entitled “ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on Myanmar: 100 Days Later – What’s Changed?” which will be held on August 4, 2021, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon (Bangkok/Jakarta Time).
Six months since the Myanmar coup and 100 days since the adoption of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) five-point consensus, the international community has yet act to meaningfully halt the violence and gross human rights violation in the country. Instead, ASEAN keeps demonstrating a compromised position under the blanket approach of “constructive engagement” and “consensus-building”.
ASEAN has failed to reach out to other stakeholders such as the National Unity Government (NUG), ethnic groups, and leaders of the Civil Disobedience Movement. Instead, the ten-member bloc has acceded to the interests of Min Aung Hlaing and hindered the implementation of the five-point Consensus.
Given ASEAN’s inability to immediately end the brutality of the Myanmar junta, it is imperative that the public in the region and international community continues to pressure the regional body. While at the same, it is also essential to consolidate and find an alternative solution that can alleviate the burden of the people on the ground and those seeking refuge.
This webinar will provide an independent and civil society-initiated assessment and evaluation of ASEAN’s response to the human rights situation in Myanmar, and provide recommendation on the implementation of the ASEAN five-point consensus, including to immediately provide humanitarian access to those in need.
