Special closing remarks by Diedrah Kelly, Ambassador of Canada to ASEAN.

Declared a global pandemic, COVID-19 threatens and adversely affects almost all aspects of human life. In addition to the cost of life, the pandemic has led to a rapid surge in violence against women and girls in Asia and across the world. Measures taken by ASEAN Governments to address the pandemic fail to address the challenges and needs of women and people of different gender identities who face multiple forms of discrimination.

Being the regional inter-governmental body mandated to protect the rights of women and children, what is the role of the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) in responding to this crisis?

In addition to unpacking this question, the webinar discusses the ASEAN’s response to COVID-19 through a gender lens, the protection of women’s rights in the Philippines and LGBTIQ rights in Vietnam in COVID-19 response measures, offline and online domestic violence against women, guidelines and good practices for gender transformative principles and recommendations to the ACWC.
